Online gambling in NZ: the casino rules explained

Online gambling in NZ is moving to a licensed online casino model. Here is what the Online Casino Gambling Act 2026 changes, when the DIA expects the first licences, and why we list no offshore casino sites in the meantime.

Online casino law in NZ today

New Zealand’s Online Casino Gambling Act came into force on 1 May 2026. The Department of Internal Affairs (DIA) says online casino advertising remains prohibited, now with takedown notices and penalties of up to NZ$5 million. It expects a three-stage licensing process to finish in early 2027, after which up to 15 licensed operators may advertise to people in New Zealand, with restrictions. A future licensing framework is not evidence that a website holds a New Zealand online casino licence today.

Why we list no NZ online casinos yet

We have not populated this page with offshore brands, welcome deals or links encouraging registration. A website accepting NZ dollars or displaying a familiar regulator’s logo is not the same as holding local authorisation. Check current Department of Internal Affairs guidance rather than relying on an old review or a projected launch date.

Online and land-based rules are different

New Zealand land-based casinos have a minimum entry age of 20. That threshold should not be casually used as proof of online casino eligibility. For online gambling in NZ, the licensing framework, permitted advertising and operator status must be checked separately as implementation progresses.

How to check an online casino licence in New Zealand

  • Look for the operator in the DIA’s register of licensed operators once it is published, matched to the exact domain.
  • Check the date of any announcement: a proposed rule, application or expression of interest is not an issued licence.
  • Read withdrawal, identity-checking and account-limiting procedures before considering a product.
  • Treat promotional terms as conditional, never as a promise of profit.
